Here's how to use a text-to-speech bot to convert typed messages into voice and join the conversation without a microphone.
Discord voice chat assumes participants will speak through a microphone. Without one on hand, in a noisy environment, late at night, or when speaking up in front of others feels hard, it's easy to stay muted and just listen instead of joining in.
Typing in a text channel is an option, but messages there are easy to miss while everyone's focused on the voice chat, so what you type can get buried.
A text-to-speech bot converts messages posted in a text channel into audio and plays them in a voice channel. With Shabemon, whatever you type in a text channel is read aloud in the voice channel, so you can take part without using a microphone.
Pairing this with automatic join / leave announcements lets you tell who came and went even without watching the screen.
Once set up, all you need to do is send a message. While the bot is connected to the voice channel, anything you type in the selected text channel is automatically converted to speech and played there — no need to turn on a microphone at any point.
You can switch which text channel gets read aloud with /select_channel, which helps on servers that separate chit-chat from work channels. If messages pile up, /clear removes the queued ones.
